The Regional History Museum, as part of the Spartanburg Art Museum’s Art & Antique Show, presents two informative sessions on the history and care of porcelain and furniture. Join us Friday afternoon at 2:30 pm to learn from Michael Higgins about 18th Century Porcelain. Come back on Saturday, February 26, at 3:15 pm when John Morton & Alan DeCredico present information for antique furniture. Both sessions are free and located in the Regional History Museum upstairs in the Carlos Moseley Building of the Chapman Cultural Center at 200 E. St. John Street.

MAYOR TO OPEN SPARTANBURG MUSIC TRAIL

SPARTANBURG—Mayor Junie White will cut the ribbon to open the Spartanburg Music Trail Friday, February 11 at noon at the corner of West Main Street and South Daniel Morgan Avenue, across the street from the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. The trail, with accompanying cell phone audio tour, honors those who have made a national or international impact in the world of music.

Family members of some of the honorees will attend, and the public is invited.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College will celebrate Black History Month in February with a variety of events, all free (unless otherwise noted) and open to the public.

Soul Food & The Jamie Wright Experience

Thursday, Feb. 10 – 6 p.m.

Student Dining Hall, Burwell Building

The Jamie Wright Experience band surrounds an event with music, creating an entertaining atmosphere that has a diversified repertoire of musical styles — from jazz, funk to dance and more. The band brings members from several walks of life who have combined their musical gifts to be heard and seen by all who are true music lovers. The band members are Rico Tyler (keyboard), Tez Sherard (drums), and Jamie Wright (lead vocalist). Dinner of Soul Food will be served.

As you may know, February is Black History Month. Converse College has a series of events starting on February 8th, continuing February 14th and February 22nd. All events are free and open to the public and are scheduled to start around 7/7:30 in the evening (see the following for details.)

Cross-Racial Dialogue Opens Black History Month Series

February, 2011

A former U.S. congressman and a former congressional staffer will lead a cross-racial dialogue about race relations in the twenty-first century South to open Black History Month at Converse College. The event is Feb. 8 at 7 pm in Hartness Auditorium. Dr. Glenn Browder and Dr. Artemesia Stanberry will each offer their perspective on race relations in the today’s South, and they will also open the floor for audience comment and questions. “Dr. Stanberry and I combine both academic and political experience in our presentations; and we are probably the only biracial team pitching biracial progress in the country,” says Browder. The event, which is co-sponsored by the department of history and politics and the office of the chaplain at Converse, is free and open to the public.

I am very pleased to share some exciting news with you, and also ask your assistance in a very important matter!

Each year, the South Carolina Hall of Fame in Myrtle Beach honors one living and one deceased citizen for his or her landmark contribution to our state and its people. One of the 2011 inductees will be Professor William Walker (1809-1875), best known today for his authorship of the shape-note hymnals Southern Harmony and Christian Harmony. At Wofford College, of course, we honor him also as a prominent and useful citizen of Spartanburg. I do not yet have a definite date for the Hall of Fame ceremonies, but they will be held in late February or early March, and you are all invited to come (and perhaps sing.)
