How South Carolina Genealogy Works: Citations, Updates & Corrections

Published July 11, 2026

This site is a research hub, not a family tree host and not a complete transcription archive. Each county page is a place-based starting kit: jurisdiction notes, record matrix, towns, newspapers, cemeteries, institutions, and topic essays.

How we cite

  • We point to repositories and published finding aids (SCDAH, State Library, FamilySearch wiki, Chronicling America, societies) rather than inventing holdings we have not verified.
  • Year ranges and coverage badges are guidance, not guarantees—always confirm at the repository.
  • Topic essays prefer primary-context language (“search parent districts,” “verify inscriptions”) over folklore-as-fact.

How we update

  • County hubs receive periodic review dates; specialty topics expand over time.
  • Newspaper and cemetery lists grow as we verify titles, runs, and surveys.
  • Corrections and missing institutions are welcome via Contact.
