On each county page, look for the Start here badge in the newspapers panel. That title is the best first masthead for local obituaries and legal notices.

Search the start-here title for your surname + decade.
Note year ranges and repository notes (State Library, local microfilm, Chronicling America, SCDAH).
Expand to title variants and regional dailies when the local weekly is thin.
