How to Research a Burned County in South Carolina

A “burned county” is not a dead end—it is a signal to change strategy. South Carolina researchers often face record loss from fire, war, and simple neglect. Use this path:

Name the year of the event and the jurisdiction that actually held the courthouse then (not only today’s county).
Search neighbors for deeds, equity, and marriages—heirs and land often cross lines. Every county hub has an “If not found here, try…” panel.
Church and cemetery first for pre-vital registration generations.
Newspapers for legal notices, obituaries, and land sales.
