Plantation & Community Names: A Lowcountry Research Crosswalk
In the Lowcountry, ancestors are often remembered by plantation or community names that never match a modern town. Use this workflow:
- Write the name exactly as the family says it (and every spelling variant).
- Place it on a river or parish map (Waccamaw, Cooper, Ashley, Combahee, Edisto, etc.).
- Search deeds, plats, and probate for the tract—then read inventories for enslaved names.
- Open the modern county hub that covers that watercourse and its parent district.
