Port Royal & the Civil War Lowcountry
Union occupation and the Port Royal Experiment created distinctive African American and military records.
Early in the Civil War, Union forces took Port Royal Sound. The subsequent “Port Royal Experiment,” missionary schools, and military administration left an unusually rich documentary trail for African American communities on the sea islands—alongside Confederate and Union service files for white and Black soldiers.
