Vital Records (Birth, Marriage, Death)
SC statewide registration is late—here is how to prove life events anyway.
Unlike some states, South Carolina’s statewide vital registration system is comparatively late. Many 18th–19th century “vitals” are proven with church registers, Bibles, newspapers, pensions, and probate—not a single state certificate.
Where to look
- County probate & equity files
- Parish/church books (especially Lowcountry Anglican and later denominations)
- Newspapers (marriages, obituaries)
- Delayed birth certificates and 20th-century DHEC records
- Military pensions and draft registrations
