Bamberg County was formed in 1897 (Barnwell). The county seat is Bamberg. Neighboring counties include Allendale, Barnwell, Colleton, Dorchester, Orangeburg.

Bamberg County was formed in 1897 from Barnwell County. It was named for the family of a local resident William Seaborn Bamberg. There was a Civil War skirmish in 1865 at Rivers Bridge. Today there is a state park at the area.
