Wow it looks like the folks in Spartanburg are going to be busy! There are quite a few happenings coming up related to the History Hub and the historical society. Wow – kudos to them for having so many interesting and engaging events ongoing!

First up is Thursday the 18th…

The next meeting of the Spartanburg History Hub is scheduled for Thursday, November 18, 7:00 pm in the East Wing Conference Room of the Chapman Cultural Center. (That’s the wing which houses Ballet Spartanburg, The Music Foundation, and the Science Center. Go upstairs to the Science Center and turn right just before the Center’s doors. We’ll have signs.)

Passing along the following from the Spartanburg History Hub-

The next meeting of the Spartanburg History Hub is scheduled for Thursday, September 23, 7:00 pm in the Barrett Room of the Spartanburg Library Headquarters.

There is no charge for attending meetings of the Spartanburg History Hub and we’ll wrap up promptly at 8:00 pm. There will be the opportunity for introductions and brief announcements. Feel free to bring fliers or brochures so you can give a short announcement and interested parties can pick up the detailed information afterward. Debra Hutchins, Local History Librarian in the library’s Kennedy Room will be leading the presentation and discussion. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to pick her brain about local history and the Kennedy Room!

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to share the exciting news that Dr. Walter Edgar, one of the most prominent historians in South Carolina and a National Public Radio personality, has agreed to speak at USC Upstate this year in commemoration of Constitution Day. Constitution Day, and corresponding activities during that week, is a national effort to increase the public and our students’ knowledge and understanding of the United States Constitution. Dr. Edgar will be giving a presentation entitled “South Carolina and the Constitution” that will discuss the importance of South Carolina in the process that gave shape to our modern nation and society. His talk will be held from 7:00-8:00pm in the Campus Life Center Ballroom on Tuesday, September 14th and will be open to the public. A selection of his most popular books on South Carolina history will be available at the event for purchase through the courtesy of the Hub City Bookstore and Dr. Edgar will be available for book-signing after his speech.

Join us for the second meeting of The Spartanburg History Hub on Thursday, March 25, at 7:00 pm, in the Family Life Center of Southside Baptist Church, 316 S. Church Street (turn into the parking lot and drive around to the back of the facilities). Emily Gore, Head of Digital Initiatives for the Clemson University Libraries, will be speaking to the group about digitizing collections and accessing digital resources in the state. There will also be time for everyone to introduce themselves and their particular connection to Spartanburg history. Brief announcements and fliers/brochures are encouraged. There is no charge for attending meetings of the Spartanburg History Hub and we wrap up by 8:00 pm.

I received the following invitation to the first meeting of the Spartanburg History Hub which will be Thursday January 28th at 7:00 pm in the Barrett Room of the Spartanburg Public Library’s Headquarters on Church Street in Spartanburg. I am unable to attend, but I asked if it would be okay to post it here and am doing so now. It sounds like a great idea and looks like a new and good way to connect the various groups that are working to preserve and share the History of Spartanburg County.
