Hampton County Genealogy




Hampton County was formed in 1878 from Beaufort County. It was named for Confederate General and Governor Wade Hampton. The county was created shortly after Wade Hampton became Governor. Allendale and Jasper Counties were formed from parts of Hampton County. (1912 Jasper/ 1919 Allendale) Many planters fled from the Union Occupation of Beaufort County to the area that became Hampton County during the Civil War. There were skirmishes in the area between Confederates and Gen. Sherman’s army.
