South Carolina Counties

As I am able I will add information and links specific to each county of South Carolina. The ultimate goal for these pages is fairly ambitious. It includes: brief summary of county history, highlight of historic events that took place in this county, points of interest in the county, genweb site for the county, census links, vital record links, tax transcriptions, cemetery links, etc. for each county, list of towns for each county. Further down the road I wouldn’t mind giving a one – two sentence footnote for each town, links to town websites. You will also find I’m starting to include some relevant news feeds on the county pages, these can give you an idea of “what’s going on” in the county these days.

You will find the listing of the counties to the right in the sidebar just beneath the “South Carolina Counties” entry.

There are currently a total of 46 counties in South Carolina.

Barbara on “Josiah B.Gillam”

Josiah Brabham Gillam was one of my husband’s great great grandfathers. His son was James Edward Gillam (called papoo by my husband). We don’t know if he (James) had any siblings. James had quite a few children, Myrtle Blanche Gillam was one of James daughters and she married Lide Benjamin Stoudenmire from Orangeburg, SC. They had two sons and Lide deserted them when the boys were very young (elementary school). Hinton Arthur Stoudemire (the family took the n out of the last name) was the oldest and was the father on my husband -Norman Arthur Stoudemire. Hinton’s younger brother Joe was killed in the war. Norman and I live in Beech Island, SC. If we can help answer any questions you can e-mail us at stoudemb@bellsouth.net

wctdoc1943 on “Relatives of William Pierce Thornton of Spartanburg, SC”

William Pierce Thornton 1849-1936) was my great grandfather and lived in the Cross Anchor section of Spartanburg County and kept a journal for many years (excerpts published in Woodruff, SC newspaper several years ago). I would love to know if that journal still exhists and where it might be located. I would also like to know if there is a Thornton family bible or other “private” records of the early Thorntons in Spartanburg County. I know that Wm. P. Thornton’s father was named Samuel and was born in South Carolina in 1800 but have been unable to find who his parents were (his mother is noted to be from Ireland on 1880 Federal Census) and father from South Carolina. Is anyone aware of any private records that might contain information about Samuel Thornton (1800-1895) or his parents, or are there any knowledgeable relatives or historians in the area? Thank you for any assistance.
