Richland County Genealogy
Richland County was formed in 1785 as part of the Camden District. The county seat is Columbia, which also serves as the State Capital. Charleston was the capital until 1786, when the state legislature decided a more central location would be preferred. Columbia was laid out specifically for this purpose. The city was burned by General Sherman during the Civil War. The University of South Carolina is located in Columbia. It was founded in 1802.
Fort Jackson was established in Richland County in 1917 as an Initial Entry Training Center. Richland county is the second most populous county in the state of South Carolina and Columbia is the most populous city. Richland County also includes the Congaree National Park, Sesquicentennial State Park, Woodrow Wilson’s boyhood home, the South Carolina State Museum and Lake Murray.

smoan on “David S. Roberts b.1835 son of Phillip Roberts, Jr.”
I am looking for info. on my gggrandfather, David S. Roberts (b. 1835). His father was Foster Roberts (b. 1803) also of Richland. If this David Roberts is my gggrandfather, he was married to a Martha Hewette (Hewitt) who was born in Ga. in 1844. Their children would have been my ggrandfather, James Charner Roberts (b. Oct., 1861) and John Lee Roberts (b. 1867?). The 1870 census shows Martha and the 2 boys in Georgia in the household of William F. Pate and his wife Irna. However, David is not listed with them. I found him listed in the 1870 census living alone in Richland, S. C. I would like to confirm that he is Martha’s husband. I know that my ggrandfather James C. was born in Fulton Co., Georgia. I’d appreciate any information on David S. and his family that anyone may have. I can also be contacted at smoan@sbcglobal.net.
